Things to do in Colorado Springs – Hike Helen Hunt Falls

There are lots of things to do in Colorado Springs, check this one out!

Helen Hunt Falls — named after Helen Hunt Jackson, author and social activist in the late 19th century — marks the abrupt descent of Cheyenne Creek where North Cheyenne Canyon Rd merges with Gold Camp Rd. The hike takes you up beside the face of the falls, then back around to another creek and a promontory from which you can view the entire valley. This is a good family hike; dog friendly as long as you keep your pet on a leash. Picnic areas abound at and near the site. Drive carefully through the canyon; the road is narrow and people hike and bike in the traffic lanes.

Colorado Springs Trivia – Broadmoor Skyview

Did you know?

The Broadmoor Hotel had its own car? The 1959 Cadillac Broadmoor Skyview

1959 cadillac broadmoor skyview

The Broadmoor Skyview was built by Superior Coach of Lima, Ohio on a Cadillac commercial chassis. Production of six 1959 Skyviews have been verified. All were delivered to the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they replaced a fleet of 1955 and 1956 S&S Cadillac observation coaches as VIP transportation.

To amortize development costs, the Skyview shared a body shell and chassis with higher-volume Superior ambulance and Royale hearse models. Dimensions were generous; a 156-inch wheelbase and a 251-inch overall length provided stretch-out comfort and a limousine-style ride. With all the eye-catching beauty of the 1959 Cadillac, plus wide-opening doors and plenty of interior room height, the Skyview offered executive transportation for eight Broadmoor guests plus luggage. Plexiglas observation roof panels provided for an extraordinary view. Leather seating was standard, along with power steering, power brakes, a 390 cubic-inch V8 engine and gold-plated ‘Broadmoor’ emblems on those iconic 1959 fins.

Colorado Springs Trivia – Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum

Did you know?

The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum holds the largest collection of Van Briggle Pottery?

van briggle pottery colorado springs

The Museum has over 60,000 objects in its collection including nationally significant collections of quilts, Van Briggle art pottery, plus the finest regional art collection in the state of Colorado. The Native American collection includes hundreds of items representative of the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho cultures. A portion of author Helen Hunt Jackson’s house is reconstructed in the Museum, furnished with her original possessions. Other collections relate to the founding of the City, the area’s mining and agricultural history, its early prominence as a health resort, and its more recent significance as a center for military training and operations.

Artus Van Briggle, an American artist of Dutch descent, was established as a world class painter in Europe. Having been trained at the finest academies there, and with paintings accepted by the Paris Salon, he received the highest honors for a painter in his day. Yet his artistic passions would ultimate lead him away from his brush, canvas, and easel toward another artistic pursuit that would ultimately define his genius.

Though Artus was a brilliant painter, his artistic passions were most eloquently expressed in the forms and colors of one of history’s oldest arts – pottery. His pursuit was the creation of exquisite satin matte glazes, like those he’d seen on ancient Chinese masterworks, in a palette of glorious colors, never achieved by any artist in modern times. The materials this brilliant artist would use for his greatest artistic pursuit would be minerals from the earth – clays, feldspars, oxides, – and the glowing orange flames of a fiery kiln. Artus had achieved some success in discovering a formula for these beautiful matte glazes prior to his arrival in Colorado but he continued his work there, seeking a standard of perfection not yet achieved.

Against the odds of failing health and a pursuit which no western artist had ever achieved, he succeeded; his passion was realized – a lost art was now reborn. The world would once again see and touch of the soft marble-like glazes first known by ancient Chinese masters half a world and so many generations away.
