Colorado Springs Trivia – The North Pole

Did you know?

The North Pole Amusement Park was designed by Arto Monaco, a former Walt Disney artist.

The 25 acre Santa’s Village is a replica of the one built in Lake Placid, NY. n the 1940’s an eight-year old girl told the artist what she believed Santa Claus’ home and village looked like. Mr. Monaco then translated her image of the magical land into blueprints for an actual village. June 16, 1956 that young girl’s dream came true when Santa’s Workshop/North Pole opened for the season.

Everything But The Oink

November 15, 2014

“Everything but the oink!” – an old saying that sums up the dietary and economic importance of hogs to farmers, ranchers and homesteaders.

To keep the meat from spoiling during the curing process, hogs were processed in the coolest, fall months of the year. Lard was rendered to use for baking and to make soap and medicinals.

Everyone participated in this annual event, so dress for the weather and join us at the barnyard for this educational demonstration.

In addition to hog processing, you can observe sausage and soap making at the Rock Ledge House and the Galloway Cabin.

Special assistance provided by Zettlemoyer’s Custom Meat Processing.

Colorado Springs Trivia – Santa Tracker

Did you know?

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) tracks Santa’s travels every Christmas Eve.

Why_NORAD_Tracks_Santa

Click me to visit the Santa Tracker

On December 24, 1955, a Sears department store placed an advertisement in a Colorado Springs newspaper that told children they could telephone Santa Claus and included a number for them to call. However, the telephone number printed was erroneously that of the Colorado Springs command center of NORAD’s predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD). Colonel Harry Shoup, who was on duty that night, told his staff to give all children who called in a “current location” for Santa Claus — and a Christmas Eve tradition was born, now known as the “NORAD Tracks Santa” program. Every year on Christmas Eve, “NORAD Tracks Santa” purports to track Santa Claus as he leaves the North Pole and delivers presents to children around the world. Today, NORAD relies on volunteers to make the program possible.
