Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Passenger Depot or Santa Fe Station is a historic railway station in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The grand depot and Harvey House was built in 1917 as a joint Santa Fe/Colorado and Southern Railway facility. In 1972, the Santa Fe tracks through Colorado Springs were removed and rail operations were consolidated on the former Rio Grande trackage on the west side of town. The depot and the nearby express building (later used as a freight house) now serve as “The Railroad Station” business center.

Cheyenne Spring House, near the Navajo Spring and the Spa, was built in the 1890s of red sandstone. It is a soda spring. Like the Navajo Spring, it has a high overall mineral content, but not an high content of any specific minerals. The building was constructed by the Manitou Mineral Water company. Its sweet water comes from limestone aquifers thought to be more than 20,000 years old and located about one mile below the surface. The spring’s water is available to the public in the bronze sculpture by Paul Rogers that stands a few feet from the spring house.

Lecture: Ute Prayer Trees of the Pikes Peak region

Pikes Peak Regional History Lecture Series

Discovering the Historic and Sacred Ute Indian Prayer Trees of the Pikes Peak Region

Presented by John Anderson, El Paso County Sheriff (ret.)

Saturday, April 11, 2015 | 2:00 – 3:00 pm

Ute Indian Prayer Trees are a unique variety of Culturally Modified Trees (CMT) that were skillfully cultivated by the Ute Indians throughout much of Colorado. The Ute began modifying trees for navigational, medicinal, nutritional, educational, burial or spiritual purposes, hundreds of years ago. Many Ute Prayer Trees can still be found today and some are believed to have been cultivated between 150-450 years ago. The Ute do not have a traditional migration story, so it remains somewhat of a mystery where they may have come from or when they arrived in what they know as the Shining Mountains, but according to the Ute oral history their Creation Story says they were placed here at the beginning of time by Senawahv, the Creator. The Ute Elders claim they were the original inhabitants of the Pikes Peak Region and have had a continuous presence for perhaps 14,000 years in what is today Colorado, with 2 Reservations still in existence in the Four Corners area (Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute Reservations). Pikes Peak, a mountain known as Tava to the Ute, was the most sacred of all the Shining Mountains for their oral history teaches them that the Creator has the day start their first and each day is a gift from the Creator. The Ute like many other Native Americans, believe all things in life, including trees, have a spirit and many of the UPTs discovered in El Paso, Teller and Custer Counties, point towards Tava (Pikes Peak) and other sacred places of the Ute people.

Little London Winds Concert

Join The Little London Winds in celebration of music education with a concert on Monday, April 6, 2015. The concert will be performed jointly with the band students of Jenkins Middle School. Each organization will each play a selection of peices of music and then perform one peice jointly. The concert is free and open to the public, no tickets required, and begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Jenkins auditorium/lunch room.

Our band members love nothing more than to see a child’s face light up with excitement when he or she sees an adult playing the same instrument and hear incredible music. We sincerely hope that fellow community members join us in supporting area music students by attending our joint concerts. Not only does it give the students encouragement in their music endeavors, but also gives the students the opportunity to play in front of a large audience.

Yuri’s Night at the Space Foundation Discovery Center
