Colorado Springs Trivia – North Cheyenne Cañon Park

Did you know?

North Cheyenne Cañon Park (Now named Cheyenne Cañon Park) was so popular with Colorado Springs Residents in 1883 that there were organized protests against the decision to close the park on Sundays to give employees a day off.

By 1883 the park, then owned by Colorado College Land Company, had a wagon road into the Cañon, various footpath trails, and was open to the public every day of the week. To show how cherished this park really is, the decision to close the park on Sundays to give park employees a day off lead to public outrage. The gate was torn down, campaigns began speaking out against the closing and even Helen Hunt Jackson (a local writer that drew her inspiration from the Cañon) finally gained the reward of having the City of Colorado Springs purchase 640 acres in 1885 to be used as a city park. At this time, the park gained it’s name Cheyenne Park, making North Cheyenne Cañon one of the oldest Parks in Colorado Springs.

Colorado Springs Trivia – Myron Stratton Home

Did you know?

The Myron Stratton Home in Colorado Springs was not established by Myron Stratton, but instead by his son, Winfield Scott Stratton.

When Winfield Scott Stratton died on 14 September 1902, he left the bulk of his estate for the establishment of the Myron Stratton Home, for “the aged poor and dependent children;” named for his father Myron Stratton. This bequest was not popular with many. After extended litigation from many, including his son, the Venture Corporation, and thirteen women who claimed to have been secretly married to Stratton, only 6 million was finally available; but the home was established successfully in 1913.

Things to do around Colorado Springs – Visit Cripple Creek

There are lots of things to do around Colorado Springs, check this one out!

Cripple Creek played an integral role in the rich heritage of Colorado. The first homesteaders arrived here in the mid-1800s. In 1890, a ranch hand named Bob Womack discovered gold and Cripple Creek changed forever. By 1900, more than 50,000 people called the gold camp home. When the golden era ended in 1918, more than $300 million in gold had been mined in what would be the last great gold rush in North America. By the 1920s, only about 40 mines remained, but two decades later, in the 1940s, the town began to promote itself as a tourist destination, offering visitors a glimpse into the past. In 1991, the town was opened to limited-stakes gaming. Today, the venerable gold camp has reinvented itself as a full-service tourist destination, all the while preserving and showcasing its rich history.
