Things to do in Colorado Springs – Farmer’s Markets

The Pikes Peak Region has a very short growing season for gardening, with only 152 average frost-free days.

Here are a few quick facts provided by Colorado State University.

Quick Facts…

  • Low humidity, fluctuating temperatures, alkaline clay soils and drying winds often restrict plant growth more than low temperatures.
  • Selecting plants that tolerate our soil and climatic conditions is key to Colorado gardening.
  • Colorado grows excellent flowers, vegetables and lawns.
  • Gardeners who are patient, know how to select plants that will do well, and manipulate the soil and microclimate will be amply rewarded.

Gardening in Colorado can be challenging. The average elevation of the state is 6,800 feet above sea-level. Three-fourths of the nation’s land above 10,000 feet is within its borders. Due to the high elevation, sunlight is frequently of high intensity and the humidity generally is low. These features, along with rapid and extreme weather changes and frequently poor soil conditions, make for challenges in growing plants.

For those reasons, many flock to local Farmers Markets for fresh produce.

Here’s a list of some of our favorites.

Colorado Springs Trivia – Wheeler Bank in Manitou Springs

Did you know?

Built in 1888 for Jerome B. Wheeler, a Colorado mining baron and financier, the building was Manitou Springs’s first bank.

The building is a combination of Romanesque Revival and Italian Villa architectural styles. The first floor shows two different facades. For the 717 Manitou Avenue address, there are heavy arches, with a half-circle leaded glass window at the top of each arch. The facade for the other half of the building, with the 719 Manitou Avenue address, is a recessed storefront. Between the two is an entry to the stairway to the second and third floors. The second- and third-floor facades are symmetrical across the two halves of the building, with windows set in a 3-1-3 pattern across both floors. The interior of the third floor spans both buildings and was originally an opera house; it has since been converted to an apartment. The red brick exterior, as of 2013, was painted a cream-buff color with red trim.
